CHA Unveils Top 'HOT 20' New Products at 2011 Summer Show

Judges select top innovations for exclusive media & buyers’ event

The Craft & Hobby Association’s (CHA’s) judge panel are pleased to announce CHA’s Hot 20 New Products being launched from the 2011 CHA Summer Conference & Trade Show in the Innovations Showcase. The products selected were featured at the exclusive CHA Innovations Sneak Peek Media & Buyers’ Event at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center on Monday, July 18.

Among the HOT 20 is the Let’s Face It! stencils from Art-C™ Mixed Media, a brand of the C-Thru® Ruler Company.

 
The “Let’s Face It!” stencils provide a base facial shape, with three different eye and lip shape stencil sets attached to the base stencil for selection and placement. Once these placement guidelines are established, the artist can add characteristics and features to make their own unique piece of artwork.

Sally Lynn MacDonald, the Creative Director for Art-C says, "Let’s Face It.  Our innate ability to recognize faces makes drawing the face a challenge for many artists. There has been a big trend in ‘She Art’ and ‘Healing Art’ where the artist creates a self-portrait on a collaged background and adds words to express themselves.  But as I looked at these faceless images I saw a need to create a tool that would allow further self expression for the mixed-media artists, students of art, and those just beginning to explore these mediums.  So I created the ‘Let’s Face It!’ stencils."

The “Let’s Face It” stencils come in two sizes, to make either a 6” x 8” face or a 3” x 4” face.

Here is an image of the sample 9" x 12" canvas board for the workshop we presented at the trade show on Monday night.  The face is composed using our ATC-1108, Let's Face It Stencil, small - which creates a 3" x 4" face.

Art-C: A Perfect Fit for Artist Trading Cards

Today we are going to explore the Artist Trading Card, or ATC.  ATCs are collectible, small-scale pieces of artwork, similar in size to traditional playing cards and sports-trading cards.

A=Artist (that is you!).  The artist creates this tiny piece of artwork, and places their contact information on the back side of the card.

T=Trading.  ATCs are meant to be exchanged between artists, so that you can collect these small artworks and have access to many different styles of work.

C=Cards.  The standard dimensions are 2 ½ inches by 3 ½ inches, or 64mm by 89mm in size for the face.  This can be expanded to a more three-dimensional piece known as a ‘chunky ATC’, which is sometimes mounted onto a piece of lumber, or a canvas with sides, top and bottom that can also be decorated.

ATCs are often mailed, so they should be able to withstand going postal, being handled by several people upon their arrival.  Package them with care for the recipient. Some people invest in clear protective sleeves or envelopes for their cards. 

But in the end what matters most to the recipient is that your ATCs were made with care.

Anniversary Mixed-Media Canvas Board

Today is my 24th Wedding Anniversary, and I wanted to make something special to add to our home and celebrate the 'double dozen'.  I took some pictures along the way to show you the progress.

I started with a canvas panel to which I added Thin Modeling Paste through a patterned lace doily using the seafoam sponge applicator and evened out with a palette knife with a toothed edge to get the pattern over the top of the stencilled designs.  I then stippled around the edges so that the pattern would appear to disappear into the canvas instead of abruptly end.

 

This dries within a few minutes and is ready to be painted.  I used our acrylic paints in Indian Yellow and Quinacridone Crimson both seperately and together with washes of water to blend the colors over the textured area.
 
Now it's time to add my hearts.  I painted these coasterboard shapes with the same colors, and used glitters and beads to embellish a few of the concentric shapes.  Here I've added the beads first, before applying the glitter.

 
I attached the largest heart to the canvas with clay and inset the other pieces inside.

 

The focal embellishment of a heart was embellished with gems, sequins and glitter as well as a couple of clay hearts and painted chipboard numbers.  I added a metal angel wing to the heart as well.  I placed a larger heart around this, and sprayed it with both Red and Gold Glitter Mist.

I also painted a heart with the acrylic washes inside the framed pieces and stamped some text with brown Stazon ink.

 

Now I've painted the clay and added a trio of painted canvas harlequin shapes along the lower left corner.

 

I attached a 4" x 4" wrapped, painted raw canvas to the board and added our picture.

ART-C CHA Winter Sneak Peeks #3

Presenting ART-C Canvas Colorables!

Beautiful pre-printed designs on raw canvas.  Printing can withstand wet or dry media.  Works with ART-C Paints & Pigments, Glitter Mists and even art markers!

 
On the 11" x 8 1/2" wooden tray show above, the background was collaged with papers from the BOTANICAL Collage Elements collection.  The focal point design is a Canvas Colorable, also from the Botanicals collection, which was colored with Copic Markers and painted with the PASTORAL Paints & Pigments assortment.  This paint assortment was also used on the border of the tray, and to watercolor on top of the Paper Clay eggs in the nest.  A little Copper Glitter Mist was added to make them speckled eggs.

Canvas Colorables designs are 5" x 7", with a one inch border surrounding the entire piece (which measures 7" x 9") so you can use it to wrap around, insert into stretcher bars or simply cut off the excess and use the scrap pieces for another project or an embellishment.
